Lot Essay

This portrait is a version of the prime original in the Royal Collection (see O. Millar, Later Georgian Pictures in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen, London, I, 1969, no. 996). Many versions of this portrait and its pendant were painted to satisfy the demand from the King's and Queen's friends and relations, official institutions, fellow sovereigns and the King's represenatives overseas.

Kilkenny Castle boasted one of the most extensive collections of historical portraits in Ireland.
