Lot Essay

Having studied in Naples and exhibited with the Macchiaioli in Florence (1855-1860), De Nittis moved to Paris in 1868 where he worked in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio. His early Italian period landscapes depict solitary figures in expansive landscapes. Our picture is representative of this early type of atmospheric landscape. Once in Paris, De Nittis shifted his focus toward chronicling Belle Epoque society.
