A SET OF TWELVE SWEDISH BIEDERMEIER BIRCH DINING-CHAIRS
Including two later open armchairs, each with arched and shaped toprail above a horizontal splat with central roundel and seat covered in striped black horsehair, the armchairs with scrolling arms and ebonised ball finial above square tapering sabre legs, stamped to the seat-rails 'MEDEVI BRUNN' and numbered '239', two chairs inscribed 'Grab' and one chair inscribed 'Grabyggn', restorations (12)

Lot Essay

A closely related chair is illustrated in S. Wallin, Nordiska Museets Möbler Fran Svenska Herrmanshem, Lund, 1979, p. 147, figs. 1169, 1170 and 1173. An almost identical armchair was sold anonymously in these Rooms 6 June 1991, lot 211, and a similar set was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 16 May 1987, lot 117.
