A DANISH WALNUT AND PARCEL-GILT BOMBE COMMODE
Mid-18th Century
The waved moulded striated red marble top above a moulded frieze-band with floral decoration and three shaped long drawers with banding, the canted angles with pierced floral applied decoration, the shaped apron with lappeted edge and central pierced C-scroll and foliate mount, on splayed legs terminating in foliate feet, the gilding refreshed, the reverse with fragmentary label inscribed 'Fra Sande 7752 ..stiania' , the marble probably later, areas of reveneering
33 in. (84 cm.) wide; 32 in. (81 cm.) high; 20 in. (51 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The bombé form and carved giltwood apron of this commode relates to the oeuvre of the Danish cabinet-maker Mathias Ortmann (d. 1757). Two similar commodes are illustrated in H. Kreisel, G. Himmelheber, et. al., Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1979, vol. II, figs. 852 and 853.
A further closely related example with identical rockwork and cabochon handles was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 2 October 1993, lot 235.
