AN ITALIAN POLYCHROME-DECORATED LEATHER AND PARCEL-GILT CHAISE A PORTEUR
Mid-18th Century
The close-nailed leather roof with C-scroll angles and pierced ormolu finials, the domed door with lifting window, above two panels with floral garlands and, one with a lyrical figure and a putto holding a scroll inscribed 'NON NISI GRANDIA CANTO', the sides with decorated panels, enclosing a yellow floral cut-velvet-lined interior with hinged seat and squab-cushion concealing a compartment, the reverse with two rampant lions and a coat-of-arms, above a medallion with a further figure and putto with a ribbon inscribed 'IRRIDENS CUSPIDE FIGO', with carrying-loops to the sides, on a later plinth with C-scroll border and castors, traces of previous decoration, the seat inscribed in black ink 'Veruet maitre sellie la Carrosserie a Marseille', redecorated and regilt
