BINDING -- OFFICIUM. Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis. Venice: Balleoni, 1754.
8° in 12s (195 x115mm). Engraved title vignette and seven full-page illustrations by B.Falconi. Contemporary Roman brown mottled calf, the covers with a wide elaborately gilt-tooled and silver- and green-painted strapwork border (the silver oxidised to grey) enclosing unidentified gilt crowned arms painted in silver, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others with repeat pattern made up from various floral tools, two silver-gilt clasps decorated with medallion portraits (Christ, the Virgin Mary, S.Philip and S.Christopher), edges gilt and overpainted with red stylised flowers and green strapwork, original mottled calf slipcase, elaborately tooled in gilt with green and silver (oxidised to black) painted borders (slight scuffing to slipcase).

THE ABBEY-BISHOP COPY OF A VERY FINE PAINTED AND GILT 'SALVIONI BINDING'. "As A.R.A.Hobson has pointed out, these brightly tooled bindings with their brilliant fore-edge decoration are on a number of books printed in Rome in the 1740's and '50's and apparently were promoted by the firm of Salvioni": Miner Bookbinding. A study by Dr. Ernst Kyriss, published in Heidelberger Jahrbuecher, 1962, VI, concludes that gifts for both ecclesiastical and secular nobles were usually bound in this style. Hobson.
