Lot Essay

The present work was painted during Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes's painting trip to Brittany in the summer of 1891. Forbes met up with a favourite Breton model on the trip, 'le père Bidon', a jolly, bronzed old sailor, who appears in several paintings over that summer.
