Lot Essay

The painter Anton Faistauer (1887-1930) was intensely interested in colour as a vehicle of artistic expressions, as is evident by his enthusiasm as a young man for the work of Cezanne. The next important influence was the art of Schiele.

Not long after enrolling at the Vienna Academy Faistauer joined his classmates Schiele, Wiegele and Robin Christian Andersen in walking out in protest against the conservative teaching system. Together with his fellow students he founded the Neukunstgruppe, which on the occasion of an exhibition in 1911 won new adherents such as Kokoschka, Hofer, Sebastian Isepp and others.
