Lot Essay

The flickering, almost impressionistic brushstrokes evident in the present piece are typical of the work of Jean III Pénicaud, a member of the famous family of Limoges enamellers. In particular, the cherub on the left side of this plaque is directly comparable to the figures on the interior of a tazza cover in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, which has been attributed to Jean III Pénicaud (Verdier, op. cit., no. 56).
