A PAIR OF REGENCE GILT-GESSO TORCHERES
Each with concave-sided triangular top decorated with simulated red- veined green marble, the pearled gadrooned and acanthus-wrapped border above a scrolled foliate-trailed tapering capital with mille-raies panels and above an entrelac and rosette waisted plinth, the canted triangular panelled tapering shaft with rosette trellis-panels on a mille raies ground and pierced husk-trailed acanthus bracket angles centred by a female mask within a strapwork cartouche with plumed headdress, the husk-trailed scrolled chanelled tripod legs garlanded with flowers and above a bifurcated boss, on scrolled feet issuing acanthus sprays, losses to decoration, refreshment to gilding, the carved edge to the top of one torchère replaced in composition

Lot Essay

Patterns for this form of acanthus-wrapped guéridon with tripod hermed shaft supported by voluted trusses were published in 1707 by Mariette after designs by André-Charles Boulle, as well as in the Oeuvres of Daniel Marot (d.1752).
