Lot Essay

These panels originally represented February and April in a set of the Twelve Months of the Year, to which Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny suggests, loc. cit., that panels showing May and June in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tournai (ibid., pp. 240-1, no. LXXXVIII) may also have belonged. Signed variants of both the present pictures, the first with different figures depicting the Parable of the Tribute Money, were sold at Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1983, lots 130-1 (ibid., p. 213, no. XXXVI). Another signed version of the second picture is in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle (ibid., p. 246, no. XCIX, fig. 125).
