Lot Essay
We are grateful to Professor Werner Sumowski for confirming the attribution from a transparency. He describes the present picture as 'ein Hauptwerk des Meisters, in jeder Hinsicht exquisit' and dates it to the early 1630s by comparison with such works as the Saint John the Baptist reproaching Herod and Herodias at Leeuwarden, which is dated 1633 (W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schuler, I, Landau/Pfalz, 1983, p. 193, no. 5, illustrated in colour p. 208). He also points out that it is iconographically exceptional for Christ to be shown seated in a representation of this subject.
