Lot Essay

The artist was the eldest son of James Hamilton, a Scotsman from Fife who moved to Brussels shortly before Philipp Ferdinand's birth. He and his two brothers were all trained as still-life painters by their father. Philipp Ferdinand had a highly successful career, serving as court painter to the Emperor Joseph I (reigned 1705-11), the Emperor Charles VI (1711-40) and the Empress Maria Theresa (reigned 1740-80), hence the initials 'S[uae] C[aesareae] M[ajestatis] C[urialis] P[ictor]' appended to the signatures on the present pictures.
