This unpublished work is evidently of Romanino's late maturity. The freedom of handling is paralleled in the panels of the pulpit in the Duomo at Asola, while the impacted composition is found in the larger canvases in the Duomo Nuovo, Brescia (see A. Nova, Girolamo Romanino, Turin, 1995, no. 70, figs. 175-7, and no. 77, figs. 191-4). The features of the man with the plumed hat on the right are so like those of the young king in the Adoration of the Magi of the organ in the church of SS. Nazzaro e Celso at Brescia (ibid., no. 81, pl. XI) that it is possible that the same model served for both.
