Lot Essay

Despite the distinctive use of white chalk, this accomplished head study has thus far escaped a firm attribution. An attribution to Michael Dahl (c.1659-1743) has been suggested, while an alternative attribution has been made to Edmund Ashfield (fl. 1669-1690).
