Lot Essay
Charles Gore led a privileged life. Educated at Westminster, he then married a wealthy heiress and as a man of means designed his own ships, travelled and painted. Gore spent much time on the continent sketching with the German artist Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807), and having settled in Weimar, was influenced by the Dutch Old Masters, in particular the van der Velde's. Gore copied marine oils, completed the unfinished drawings of other artists, and also developed his own style having acquired an expert knowledge of the sea. Examples of Gore's work are in the British Museum and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
