Lot Essay

Middleton was born in Norwich and his watercolours display the characteristic Norwich School preoccupation with light. He was a pupil of J.B. Ladbroke (1803-1879), Joseph Stannard (1797-1830) and Henry Bright (1810-1873) and was influenced by his close friend Thomas Lound (1802-1861). Middleton went on a number of sketching tours visiting Devon and Scotland. He exhibited in London from 1847-1849 and then returned to Norfolk.
A slightly larger watercolour of a track at the edge of a wood, was sold at Christie's London, 12 July 1994, lot 70 (19,550).
