Lot Essay

The present drawing is probably a study for the engraved plates of African Scenery and Animals, London, 1804. Samuel was the younger brother of William Daniell, R.A. and exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1792 when only 17 years old. Mallalieu considers him to the most talented member of the Daniell family.
In 1799 he sailed to the Cape and travelled in Africa, visiting places previously unexplored by Europeans such as Bechuanaland (now Botswana). After returning briefly to England he left for Ceylon where he remained for the rest of his life.
Two unfinished watercolours depicting Pallah Deer and the Koodo for African Scenery and Animals were sold at Christie's London, 6 June 1972, lots 131 and 132 (1800 gns. and 1900 gns.)
