Specialist note

Linlithgow Palace stands on a promontory above Linlithgow Loch and was chosen by Edward I as a base for the siege of Stirling in 1301. The castle he built was designed by James of Saint George, architect of the great Edwardian castles in North Wales, but subsequently underwent several modifications by King James I, IV, V and VI of Scotland.
