Lot Essay

Marie-Adélaïde de Savoie married the Duc de Bourgogne, King Louis XIV's grandson, in 1697. The Duc and Duchesse de Bourgogne died within six days of each other in 1711 from an attack of smallpox, leaving the elderly King with only one great-grandson, the future King Louis XV. The Duchesse had been brought up at the French court and was a favourite of the King, who was deeply affected by her death.
