Lot Essay

This cabinet, with its geometric inlay and columnar caryatid feet, typifies the exotic furniture manufactured for Portuguese traders at Indian and Goanese ports in the 17th century.

A virtually identical cabinet-on-stand is in the Museo Nacional de Arte Antiguo, Lisbon and is illustrated in L. Feduchi, A History of World Furniture, 1975, p. 446, fig. 839.
