A CRIMSON VELVET AND YELLOW SILK THREAD ALTAR PANEL
PROBABLY ITALIAN, 16TH CENTURY

With appliqué roundels enclosing winged putti masks, birds and Saint Francis holding a crucifix against a crimson velvet ground-7ft. 4in. x 1ft. (2m. 15cm. x 30cm.), together with a crimson velvet and gold thread appliqué runner with repeating foliate design-8ft. 8in. x 1ft. 8¼in. (2m. 64cm. x 51.5cm.), a crimson cut-velvet panel-6ft. 6in. x 1ft. 9½in. (1m. 98cm. x 55cm.), a slate blue cut-velvet and gold thread runner-6ft. 7in. x 1ft. 8¾in. (2m. x 53cm.), a crimson velvet and metallic-thread appliqué banner with a coat-of-arms-5ft. 4in. x 3ft. 4in. (1m. 62cm. x 1m. 2cm.), and a later purple velvet and floral appliqué hanging-6ft. x 3ft. 6in. (1m. 80cm. x 107cm.)
