Lot Essay

This weaving is one from a series of tapestries representing the "Nine Heroes" including three heroes of Antiquity, three heroes of the Old Testatment and three Christian heroes. The place of origin is still debated. The Marche ateliers, such as Felletin and Aubusson, have been suggested as a place of manufacture. For a complete discussion, see D. Chevalier, Les Tapisseries d'Aubusson et de Felletin, Paris, 1988, p. 20-21.
