Lot Essay

Recorded by Georges Marlier as being by an artist associated with Pieter Coecke (G. Marlier, Pieter Coecke, d'Alost, 1966, Appendice, V, p. 404), the present composition is grouped under the title Master of the Musée de L'Assistance Publique, after the institution where the primary version of this painting is preserved. Both Marlier and Friedländer record further versions differing only slightly in composition, most notably that in the Saint Plechelmus church, Oldenzaal (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, XII, 1975, p. 104, no. 142, pl. 72-3).
