Lot Essay

When the painting was in the Cook Collection, it was assumed, probably correctly, to depict the IJ in Amsterdam. With the immediate foreground in shadow, large vessels to the left and a smaller one to the right moving in profile before a point of land, this composition employs one of Bakhuizen's favored designs for both paintings (see also the painting sold at Lepke, Berlin, March 29, 1927, lot 109) and drawings (see the View of Shipping on the IJ, Teylers Museum, Haarlem, in the catalogue of the exhibition, Ludolf Bakhuizen, Emden, Kunsthalle, 1985, illustrated).
