Lot Essay
Three autograph versions of the present composition are known, in Southampton Art Gallery, Southampton (oil on panel, 104 x 74cm.), in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (oil on panel, 104 x 73cm.), and that offered for sale at Sotheby's, London, July 3, 1991, lot 83 (oil on canvas, 116 x 76cm.). The present composition is a studio version of the Southampton painting, in which the cross is omitted from the coral necklace, and which Held (J. Held, Jordaens' Portraits of his family, Art Bulletin, XXII, March 1940, no. 1, p. 82, note 48), d'Hulst (R-A d'Hulst, Jacob Jordaens, 1982, pp. 125-6) and Jaffé (M. Jaffé, in the exhibition catalogue, Jacob Jordeans, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 1968-9, p. 93, no. 39) believe to be the primary version. Held and d'Hulst (op. cit.) both date the three originals to circa 1628, though Jaffé (op. cit.) suggests an earlier date on stylistic grounds.
