Lot Essay

This chair, with its serpentined and acanthus-wrapped legs terminating in voluted brackets and feet and its arm-rests enriched with acanthus foliage and flowers, is designed in the George II 'picturesque' manner of the 1740's. This armchair appears to be part of a larger suite. A settee, a pair of armchairs and five side chairs of this pattern from 1st Viscount Leverhulme's collection passed through the London galleries of Moss Harris.
