LATE 19TH CENTURY, ATTRIBUTED TO VIARDOT

With shaped rectangular panelled top inlaid with fields of foliate sprays above a shaped foliate pierce carved frieze applied with handles and grotesque masks, on stylized cabriole legs with paw feet and a similarly carved H-stretcher

Lot Essay

Gabriel Viardot was known to have worked in Paris at 5, rue du Grand-Chantier in 1860. Subsequently, in successive moves to 15, rue de Chaume and 3, rue des Archives in 1878 he settled at 36, rue Amelot untill the end of the century. Although he produced furniture in all the fashionable styles he is most well known for his interpretations done in the Japanese tast. At the l'Exposition Universelle in 1867 he was awarded four medals and in 1878 he won a silver medal and in 1889 was awarded the gold medal.
