Lot Essay

The swan-form candlearms of the offered lot relate to a pair of candelabra of 1837 executed by Jean-François Denière for the Grand Trianon at Versailles. Denière was one of the most successful bronziers of the second quarter of the 19th century working first with François-Thomas Matelin and establishing his own firm in 1820. He became bronzier du roi to Louis-Philippe and was named an officier de la Légion d'honneur in 1845 (see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, fig. 5.17.13, p. 393).
