GU DACHANG (Lingjia shanmin, 1813-after 1880)

Palace Ladies Tuning the Lute, after Zhou Fang (circa 730-800)

Handscroll, ink and color on paper, 11 x 37½in. (28 x 95cm.)
Entitled and with two inscriptions. The first reads:
"He copied this after his illnesss in yi si year (1845) and gave it to He Pingshan. Pingshan then gave it to Jiang Jieqing (Jiang Que, 1838-1879)."
Dated yi chou year (1865) and signed: Lingjia shanmin
The second states:
"The original painting by Zhou Fang was collected by my teacher Liu Yanchong (1809-1847)"

Fourteen colophons, including three of the artist, and one each of Qi Xueqin (1803-after 1871), Pan Zunqi (1808-1892), Liu Yanchong, Jiang Ti, Jiang Cheng, Pan Zhongrui, Liu Lufen (all 19th century)
Thirty-three collectors' seals, including eleven of Liu Yanchong, two of Peng Yunzhang, and four each of Shen Zuo and Gu Zenshou (both 19th century).
