The gently faceted sides with eight recessed, petal-shaped panels, four carved with flowering plants, including prunus, magnolia, lotus and narcissus, separated by a gilded inscription repeated in the other four, all above a band of chrysanthemum petals rising from the foot, the layered, semi-translucent glass of deep egg-yolk tone on the exterior and of bright egg-yolk tone on the interior creating a luminous, almost opalescent, quality when held to the light, base with a gilded, inscribed, Qianlong four-character seal mark within a double square

The inscription may be loosely translated,
'A song sad and lonely
Benefiting the spirit, pacing alone;
Remembering Chu (an ancient state)
and that Yangtze I know and love;
A jade like incense'
