THREE SMALL LACQUER BOXES
EDO PERIOD (17TH AND 18TH CENTURY)
The first of rounded rectangular shape, 17th century, decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with leafing vines reserved on a black ground sprinkled with nashiji, the interior matching, the second of square shape also with rounded corners decorated in takamaki-e with a cherry tree along a stream against a ground of dense sprinkled gold, the sides and interior nashiji, and the third of rounded square shape patterned on the lid in gold and silver hiramaki-e with wisteria vines and pines on a black ground applied with nashiji, the interior decorated in gold hiramaki-e with stands of chrysanthemums on a brownish black ground, all mounted with metal rims--3½ x 2½ x 1in. (8.3 x 5.7 x 2.5cm.), 2¾ x 2¾ x 1½in. (7 x 7 x 3.5cm.) and 3¼ x 3¼ x 1 3/8in. (8.2 x 8.2 x 3.2cm.), edge nicks, small surface blisters, wear (3)
