"British physician, best known for his creation (in 1889) of the indefatigable Sherlock Holmes. Doyle tried to kill his hero off some thirteen years later, only to incur the wrath of Holmes's many admirers - including several members of Parliament. Holmes returned in 1903, and has been around ever since in a variety of literary and cinematic incarnations"--W.M.
