A PAIR OF FINE BRAZILIAN SILVER PROCESSIONAL LANTERNS

Each waisted tri-form, chased and applied at the corners with foliage on a matted ground, the sides pierced and chased with panels of trelliswork, one on each hinged as a door, opening to reveal a candlesocket, on wood poles each covered with six silver sleeves, each applied with moldings and chased with rocaille, apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

A pair of lanterns from the same set was sold in these Rooms, October 30, 1990, lot 71. Another pair, also identical, are in a private collection and illustrated in Taullard, Plateria Sudamericana, 1942, fig. 198 and El Arte Luso Brasileño en el Rio de la Plata, exhibition cat., Buenos Aires, 1966, no. 30. One of another pair, also unmarked and attributed to Rio de Janeiro, is illustrated in P.M. Bardi, Arte da Prata no Brasil, 1979, p. 65.
