Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Russia had looked to France for inspiration and for the finest luxury goods in Europe. At the end of the nineteenth century, the famed French jeweler Boucheron opened a branch of his renowned Palais Royale shop in Moscow, where Muscovites and Petersbourgeoises flocked to see the latest Parisian taste.
