RUSSIAN IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY, PERIOD OF NICHOLAS I (1825-1855), CROWNED CYPHER IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE

Comprising a tea-pot, covered sugar bowl, compote, and tea-cup and saucer, each parecl-gilt and polychrome-decorated in imitation of stained-glass, the handles in the form of neriads, the finials as busts of roman soldiers

Lot Essay

These pieces come from the Gothic Service created for the Cottage at Peterhof in 1831, which initially consisted of 57 dessert pieces. In 1843 another 36 pieces were introduced, all based on the theme of the stained glass window. (cf. Masetto (ed.), Le Porcellane Imperiali Russe dal 1744 al 1917, Faenza, 1993, pp. 69-70)
