Lot Essay
Few records exist to give structure to the career of Bass. The present composition is a literal interpretation of a passage taken from Milton's 'Paradise Lost' (Book VI, Lines 350-3)
Forthwith on all sides to his end was run
By angels many and strong, who interpos'd
Defence where others bore him on their shields
Back to his chariot.
Bass exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807-8, showing works taken only from John Milton's writings and displaying the influence of Henri Fuseli. From 1815-8 he exhibited only portraits. Prior to lining the canvas was dated 1807.
