Lot Essay

This is a study for the lower right section of the mural representing the theme of war, executed by the artist in 1955-1956 at the United Nations, New York. The mural is illustrated in two books on Portinari written by Antonio Bento and published by Leo Christiano Editorial Ltda., Rio de Janeiro, 1980, pp. 132-133 and Graficos Brunner Ltda. São Paulo, 1972, pp. 100-101

There are statements of authenticity from Maria Victoria and João Candido Portinari on the reverse, dated February 5, 1970.
