(135 x 7 3/4 in.), ornately printed with a decorative typographical border and bold heading: "State of Tennessee," papered seal at top left, accomplished in manuscript (slightly pale), neat repairs, light stains along several folds, small patch to border at top.

The future President of the Republic of Texas commissions a Colonel Commandant in the Tennessee state militia: "Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, conduct and fidelity of Henry W. Coffin...We commission him a Colonel Commandant...with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining...and all officers and privates under his command, are to be obedient to him..."

A very early document signed in Houston's first year as Governor of Tennessee.
