These elegant chairs are designed in the fashionable Louis XVI style of the 1780's introduced by the Prince Regent's architect Henry Holland. Holland supplied furniture in the French taste to Carlton House, the Regent's sumptuous London palace, employing French craftsmen such as Alexandre Louis Delabrière. A similar pair of related side chairs by Delabrière after designs by Holland, was supplied for the boudoir at Southill, Bedfordshire for Samuel Whitbread (see F. Watson, et al., Southill, A Regency House, 1951, fig. 51).
