HAWTHORNE, NATHANIEL. Eight Port of Salem Custom House documents signed ("Nath Hawthorne"), all Salem, Mass., 16 October-7 December 1848. Each 1 page, one oblong 8vo, the others small 4to, printed on blue laid paper, all accomplished in another hand, each signed by Hawthorne in dark red ink and each counter signed "John F. Miller" and "John D. Howard," one also countersigned by Inspector William Lee (mentioned fondly by Hawthorne in his introductory "The Custom-House" to The Scarlet Letter), some wrinkling and slightstaining, a stamped corner chipped on one, a few small fold tears and holes, each laid in loose in archival mount. Nearly all receipts for duties paid on goods entering the Port of Salem, District of Salem and Beverly, all signed by Hawthorne in his capacity as Surveyor of the Port. (8)
