Lot Essay

Gymnast was conceived in 1934 and according to Kirstein, "This miniature full-length portrait was refuse by the parents of the model, after two versions in plaster were made. The original cast, mounted on a green marble base, is in the Nadelman Estate. Subsequently some four copies of the first version were cast in bronze. The refused original [the present bronze] is in the collection of Martin Liefer, New York City."
