REAL DE CATORCE
The coinage of Catorce is remarkable in the history of numismatics, since all of it -- 2, 4, and 8-Reales in silver -- is dated to a single year, 1863, and that year is incorrect. Documentary evidence shows that the coinage was actually struck during a few months in 1865-6, under the Empire. Since imperial dies were not at hand, pre-dated Republican dies were provided from the mints of Mexico or Potosi (the 8-Reales occurs with mintmark re-cut from Potosi).
