AN ATTIC RED-FIGURE BELL-KRATER
attributed to the Agrigento Painter
Circa 460-450 B.C.

The a-side with an aulete (double flute player) in the center, facing right, nude but for a chlamys wrapped under his arms and over his shoulders, his head thrown back, his cheeks puffed, wearing a fillet with long ties, behind him a nude torch bearer moves left but looks right, the torch in his left hand, his right hand up-raised, a chlamys draped over his shoulders, and to the right an agitated bearded man faces left, nude but for the chlamys which has slipped off his right shoulder due to his flapping arms and hangs from his left arm and shoulder, both attendants wearing a fillet, the b-side with three draped youths, those to the left and right carry a staff, the figure in the center with his cloak pulled over his head to conceal his face, a band of meander and saltire squares below each scene, laurel above, repaired from large fragments
