A ROMAN MARBLE SARCOPHAGUS FRAGMENT
Circa 3rd Century A.D.

The front panel from a mythological sarcophagus divided by two trees into three scenes, to the left stand Hippolytus and a companion within a sanctuary of Diana, both are nude but for a cloak pinned at the shoulder, the hero pours a libation on to an altar, a sacrificial bull below, an image of the goddess above, a draped curtain behind the scene, in the center, Hippolytus on horseback charges a boar, his spear raised, his cloak billowing behind, with a companion on horseback to his right, an attendant to the left, hunting dogs in persuit below, to the right stand Hippolytus and a his companion, the figure to the left depicted from behind, the figure at the corner shown frontally, holding a spear, mounted within a removable metal frame with chains at the corners for suspension
