Shaped square, on four openwork feet, the border with woven band, the field engraved with a samurai brandishing a sword, foliage and birds, and with the stylized monogram M.P.A., 1835/2359, marked on reverse

Lot Essay

This salver is an early example of Tiffany's designs in the Japanese taste, and is apparently based on the woodblock prints of Hokusai, recently available in the West in the late 1860s.
