MILDRED PIERCE, 1945
A waitress uniform worn by Joan Crawford in her Academy Award winning performance. The film tells the story of "Mildred," a housewife and waitress, who finds success in business but looses control of her daughter, especially when she realizes they are competing for the love of the same man.
The uniform is a blue and white cotton check with off-white color and cuffs. The apron was the one tested on Ms. Crawford during pre- production. The off-white hair ornament is one of two pieces designed with box ruffles and elastic hair mountings at each scalloped end. The hair piece is mounted on a wig simply to illustrate "Mildred's look" A matching uniform and headpiece worn by actress Butterfly McQueen who played an integral role in the story is included. During the film the dress served as a "hand me down" to "Mildred's" housekeeper after "Mildred" became a restaurateur. A menu from Mildred's Drive In, a black and white studio photograph of Butterfly McQueen in uniform and an original wardrobe department dressmaker form for Joan Craword is inlcuded with the group. The form has specific measurments and notations for the cutter and fitter. Joan Crawford is written on the chest and neck areas.
