A PAIR OF RARE HUANGHUALI ADJUSTABLE LAMPSTANDS, SHENGJIANSHI DENGTAI
LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY
The square candle stand with indented corners supported by four hanging spandrels with scrolling openwork arranged around a central adjustable post, the post slotting through the humpback top rail and horizontal stretcher and joined at the lower end to a horizontal movable bar, secured in grooved inner faces of the side posts, the posts connected by stretchers at the base framing three panels, the top with an openwork design of dragons flanking a flaming pearl, above a panel with a stylized shou character, itself above a pierced panel and slanted curvilinear aprons, supported at the base by pairs of shaped, standing spandrels raised on notched shoe feet
