"BONEHEAD" MERKLE PHOTOGRAPHS
Photographs of the major league players involved in the "Bonehead" Merkle incident on September 23, 1908. In a game that would have a serious affect on the pennant race, Fred Merkle failed to touch second base on a play which would have won a crucial game for the Giants. He was eventually called out negating the winning run. The game was later replayed and the Giants lost both the game and the pennant. Photographs include Merkle; Moose McCormick, the runner on third; Al Bridwell, the hitter; Hofman, the centerfielder who retrieved the ball; Evers, who tagged the base; Hank O'Day, the umpire who called Merkle out (illustrated) and Harry Pulliam, the league president who upheld the decision and ordered the replay.
