"LION OF KORLOFF" TENNIS TROPHY
On May 28, 1994, Pete Sampras directed that the famous "Lion of Korloff" trophy, to which he was entitled after his three consecutive victories in the Lyon Open Tennis Tournament, be given to the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. The unique trophy was created by the Korloff jewlery company of France. The 17 Kilogram trophy was crafted in bronze gold and 1265 diamonds totalling 108 carats and took fifteen people 1500 hours to create. Arthur Ashe, in addition to winning tennis titles at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open distinguished himself as a consummate sportsman, gentleman and great humanitarian. Arthur died in 1993 of an AIDS related disease. The Foundation and successor Endowment Organization is active in education, research, support programs, training of International AIDS healthcare workers and experimental chemical trials.
